Third gender in Germany

Finally, a new law in Germany creates a third sex category on birth records. It could seem like an obvious solution to some problems of intersex: if some babies are born with bodies that are neither clearly male nor female, then it seems there should be some category beside male or female. So, parents will be allowed to chose an X option instead of the typical M or F.

The legislation, which went into effect on Friday Nov. 1, 2013, was enacted in order to give parents and children more time before making life-changing sex reassignment decisions. Germany is the first European nation to offer the third gender designation.

In the past, by contrast, parents have generally relied on physicians to fix intersex children through the use of surgical and hormonal sex normalizations. Instead of individuals deciding for themselves at maturity, decisions concerning sex assignment were made in infancy by physicians and parents. Now, with the new category introduced by German law, the ambiguity presented by infants with atypical sex anatomies can be managed simply with a new label. A very good news.

If you’re a Twitter user you may have tried to save some images and noticed they come out with a weird file file extension (.jpg-large) that make them hard to handle. If you double click on it, in a Microsoft Windows environment, you’ll get a message saying there are no programs able to open it.

Technically, that file is a normal jpeg image, so if you rename the file with a .jpg extension you can handle it as you do for all the other image files. You may find it annoying, I do, so there’s a workaround that allow to open that kind of file with a double click. The key is identifying a software able to manage it. Most picture viewers or editors can’t open it. I tried many with no luck (Psp, Abobe Photoshop, Phoxo), but Microsoft Paint can. Lol. So you can use it to view your Twitter images quickly. Unfortunately, you won’t get the image preview in the file manager. Other software able to open it are the most common Internet Browsers; Mozilla Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Internet Explorer can read it. All you have to do is associate the .jpg-large file extension with your favorite software and you’re done.

Not very difficult, however, understanding this article and the workaround require you to have a little bit of confidence with the operative system. If you feel a little bit in trouble with this stuff, but want to learn more, there’s a small guide that explain how to change the default program for a specific file extension in windows.

In the year 2010, a research published by the Danish family planning association revealed that 29% of the young women in the sample analysis did not feel comfortable with their own bodies and especially with their private parts. According to the research, many young women believe they are ugly or abnormal because their points of reference, found on the Internet for example, are often retouched photos or photos of women who have already undergone plastic surgery.

So they, instead of simply promoting more the “amateur” niche on the Internet, decided to go bring something extra to the book and came up with the idea of having a photo booth for feminine private parts. Through this photographic collection they intend to awaken women to the knowledge of their own bodies.

On the occasion of the Women´s International Day the 8th of March, year 2011, at the Goethe Institute in Copenhagen the Kussomat took the first 70 photos. The following seventy photos were taken while the booth was installed in the faculty of medicine in Copenhagen. Other photos came from the Roskilde Festival, in June 2011.

The Kussomat was created by four enthusiastic female students at the faculty of engineering, Copenhagen university, who threw themselves into the project and finished the product in only three weeks. David Cameron retreats in war on internet porn, admitting there will be problems down the line amid debate over censorship.
